Deputies said 36-year-old Derrill Naquin was booked as a fugitive on the charge of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer and one count of flight from an officer.

He is currently being held without bond and is awaiting release to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Police said the incident began at about 4:30 p.m. when deputy Wesley Corkern attempted to execute an arrest warrant on Naquin on Friendship Church Road. That's when Naquin jumped into a nearby vehicle, police said.

"Deputy Corkern gave numerous loud verbal commands for Naquin to exit the vehicle and get to the ground," said Sheriff Daniel Edwards. "Naquin remained noncompliant to Deputy Corkern's demands. Deputy Corkern then approached Naquin's vehicle and shattered the driver's side window in an attempt to disengage the ignition. At this time, Naquin put the car in gear and began to accelerate with Deputy Corkern still inside the vehicle."

According to a police report, Naquin's arrest came after the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office notified the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office that their units were in pursuit of Naquin’s vehicle, a 1994 gray Chrysler Concorde.

Tangipahoa deputies advised that their units were eastbound on Interstate 12 approaching the parish line. St. Tammany deputies began to quickly respond to the interstate in order to deploy spike strips.

Deputies at the state Highway 1077 overpass said they spotted Naquin’s vehicle and quickly deployed a spike strip that deflated one of the vehicle's tires. They said this caused Naquin’s vehicle to slow to approximately 50 mph.

Deputies said they blocked onramps to the I-12 eastbound lanes to prevent citizens from being caught in the pursuit until it passed. Several more unsuccessful attempts were made to spike the tires of Naquin’s vehicle.

Investigators said Naquin’s remaining three tires were finally deflated when two deputies successfully deployed two spike strips near the state Highway 1088 overpass. The pursuit came to an end shortly thereafter when Naquin left the roadway and stopped at the wood line.

Deputies said they rushed to the vehicle and found Naquin with a knife protruding from his chest. Naquin stated to deputies that he stabbed himself during the course of the pursuit, according to the police report.

Naquin was transported to the Louisianan Heart Hospital, where he was treated.

Authorities said his wounds proved to be minor and he transferred to the St. Tammany Parish Jail and booked without further incident.
