Dyson plucks the blades off its fan

LONDON - British inventor James Dyson has unveiled a bladeless fan which he is touting as a healthy and environmentally friendly alternative to air conditioning.

The 62-year-old designer, better known as the inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner, said Monday that his sci-fi-looking fans are safer and easier to clean than traditional desk fans.

Air is sucked into the base and fired out of a ring-like aperture at the top. Dyson says the airflow is far smoother than a regular fan.
