SHANKSVILLE, Pa. - Country musician Trace Adkins will perform the national anthem at this year’s ceremony honoring the people who died on United Airlines Flight 93 when it crashed in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001.
The National Park Service and the Families of Flight 93 group announced Tuesday that Adkins will perform this Sept. 11. Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell will be the keynote speaker.
The plane was traveling from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco when it was diverted by hijackers likely seeking to crash it into the White House or Capitol.
The 9/11 Commission report said the hijackers crashed the plane as passengers tried to seize control of the cockpit. All 33 passengers and seven crew members died.
A $58 million, 2,200-acre memorial is scheduled to open on the 10th anniversary of the attack.
