The smoke and haze filling the Lake Tahoe Basin and the Truckee Meadows has drifted over from the Big Meadows fire burning in the Yosemite National Park, according to the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District.

The air quality index for much of Reno-Tahoe is listed in the moderate range for Friday. That means the air quality is acceptable, but some pollutants might be a moderate health concern for people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution. If you are sensitive to smoke, it is best to stay indoors with your windows closed until the smoke dissipates.

The Big Meadow fire was a prescribed burn that escaped firefighters on Aug. 26. It is burning 2,200 acres and is about 10 percent contained.

The fire is burning within the damaged area of the 1990 A-Rock fire. Authorities have evacuated several campgrounds within the park.

Three helicopters, four air tankers, 15 crews and 24 engines are currently fighting the fire. There is no estimate for complete containment or control.
