SPRING LAKE, Mich. - Southwestern Michigan-based charity International Aid is shutting down because of its financial struggles.

The Spring Lake-based nonprofit said Wednesday it needed to collect about $1.5 million in the past two months to balance its $70 million budget, but only gathered between $150,000 and $200,000.

International Aid has offered health and humanitarian support worldwide since 1980.

CEO Gordon Loux says he is in discussions with six or seven nonprofits about rolling some International Aid programs into other organizations.

WWMT-TV and The Grand Rapids Press report about 40 people were employed by International Aid in the U.S. The shutdown also will affect 32 employees in Honduras and the Philippines.
