WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is canceling plans to attend international meetings in Italy and Greece this week as she recovers from surgery to repair a broken elbow.
Clinton suffered the injury in a fall at the State Department last Wednesday. She had surgery on Friday.
Deputy Secretary of States James Steinberg told reporters that Clinton is recovering but is not up to making the trip for a series of meetings on major issues like Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Israel-Palestinian peace process.
Steinberg said he will lead the U.S. delegation to a set of meetings in Greece and William Burns, the under secretary of state for political affairs, will head the U.S. delegation to separate talks in Italy.
