David Shuster is an Emmy award winning MSNBC correspondent based in Washington, D.C.  He reports daily for the network’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews.”

In August 2006, he was awarded the prestigious “Bugle Award” by the 1.3 million member organization “Disabled American Veterans.”  The annual honor recognizes journalists who bring attention to disabled veterans.  Shuster won for his extensive coverage of the 2005 National Disable Veterans Winter Sports Clinic, including an hour long special that aired on MSNBC.

In August of 2005, Shuster reported from the eye of Hurricane Katrina as it made landfall in Biloxi, Mississippi, Shuster’s reports aired in MSNBC and “NBC Nightly News.”  Shuster also spent several weeks reporting on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina from New Orleans.

In 2004, Shuster led Hardball’s daily reporting on the 2004 Presidential campaign.  As part of this coverage, Shuster headed up the MSNBC “ad watch team,” fact checking and analyzing more than 150 campaign commercials throughout the course of the election.  He also covered both national political conventions and all of the presidential campaign primaries.

In the fall of 2003, Shuster spent two months in California leading Hardball’s coverage of the recall of Governor Gray Davis and the election of Arnold Schwarzenegger.  In the winter and spring of 2003, Shuster reported on the invasion of Iraq from US Central Command in Doha, Qatar for NBC News and MSNBC.  His hourly “live” reports aired in prime time in the U-S, making this the most visible assignment for Shuster since joining NBC.

From 1996 - 2002, Shuster was a Washington, D.C. based correspondent for the Fox News Channel. He was at the Pentagon on 9-11 and led Fox’s coverage of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan. During the Clinton administration, Shuster led Fox’s coverage of the Clinton investigations including “Whitewater,” the Monica Lewinsky scandal, the Starr report and the Senate impeachment trial.

Shuster was also a member of Fox’s “You Decide 2000” political team. He spent four months on John McCain’s “Straight Talk Express” bus and was Fox’s lead correspondent for McCain’s presidential campaign.

From 1994 - 1996, Mr. Shuster was a political reporter for KATV (ABC) Little Rock, Arkansas. He led the station’s coverage of “Whitewater,” including the indictments, trial, and convictions of Arkansas Governor Jim Guy Tucker.  Shuster’s reporting on a manufactured housing scandal earned him a regional Emmy Award for investigative journalism.

Shuster began his journalism career in CNN’s Washington, D.C. bureau. From 1990 - 1994, he was an assignment editor and field producer, helping CNN cover the Persian Gulf War and the 1992 Presidential election campaign.

David Shuster is a native of Bloomington, Indiana. He graduated with honors from the University of Michigan. As a topflight athlete, Mr. Shuster’s responsibilities at NBC include batting cleanup and playing center field on the bureau’s softball team. David Shuster lives in Washington, D.C.
