WARWICK, R.I. - A 15-year-old girl wearing headphones and looking down at her cell phone while crossing a street was struck and killed Friday by a school bus carrying students to a suburban Providence high school, police said.

Kimberly Pisaturo apparently did not hear a car horn warning her of the imminent collision.

Pisaturo was hit around 7 a.m. as the bus turned left at an intersection near Pilgrim High School, where she was a sophomore. The bus driver pulled over immediately after realizing the teen had been struck.

Pisaturo's family requested privacy.

"Her academic standing was excellent. She was a very, very good student," said Warwick schools superintendent Peter Horoschak. "It's a tremendous loss to the school, to the family, and to all of us in the Warwick public schools."

Warwick police and the state medical examiner's office were investigating.

A spokeswoman for the Ohio-based First Student bus company said the driver has been put on leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

Police said no charges are pending against the driver.
