Drawings of Sept. 11 attacks taken off Web site

WASHINGTON - An online coloring book from 2003 that showed planes crashing into the World Trade Center has been removed from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Web site.

Besides drawings inspired by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the coloring book, "A Scary Thing Happened," showed images of heavy rains, floods and house fires.

FEMA is reviewing all content the Bush administration put on the agency's Web site, FEMA spokesman Clark Stevens said. He would not give the specific reasons for taking the coloring book off the site.

FEMA is also reviewing the Homeland Security Department's public preparedness site, Ready.gov. It focused on terrorism, pandemics and natural disasters and featured the slogan: "Prepare. Plan. Stay Informed."

That site was launched in February 2003 under a contract with the Ad Council. The Ad Council has described the Ready campaign as one of the most successful campaign launches in its history.

The coloring book "A Scary Thing Happened" was part of a FEMA Web site for children that featured games, such as a hurricane quiz and a snowman dressing game that was part of a "winter preparedness" exercise.

The site included a disaster rap song for kids:

"Disaster ... it can happen anywhere,

"But we've got a few tips, so you can be prepared,

"For floods, tornadoes, or even a 'quake,

"You've got to be ready so your heart don't break."

The removal of the coloring book was first reported by the Web site The Smoking Gun.
