Craigslist suspect’s ex-fiancee is ‘moving on’

The fiancee of accused Craigslist killer Philip Markoff still believes in his innocence — but also intends to move on with her own life.

Megan McAllister visited Markoff in a Boston jail yesterday, their first meeting since the man she had intended to marry in August was arrested 10 days ago and charged with murdering a woman in one Boston hotel and assaulting another woman in a different hotel. Police say Markoff had set up meetings with both through sexual services ads placed on Craigslist.

“I think, yes, she believes that he is innocent,” her attorney, Robert Honecker, told TODAY’s Meredith Vieira Thursday morning from Boston. Honecker said that McAllister spoke privately with Markoff for 25 minutes.

“I think she feels that she’s supportive of him. The man that she knew and loved for four years is not the man that’s being portrayed in the media,” Honecker said.

But McAllister is not going to put her life on hold while the legal process plays itself out, he added.

“I can’t answer for the rest of her life. We’ve been dealing with this difficult situation on a day-to-day basis,” Honecker said. “The plans she made for life are not there.”

The wedding is off, the attorney confirmed, and not likely to ever happen. “The chances for that event to occur in the future, I would suggest, would be unlikely,” Honecker said.

The 23-year-old McAllister has issued statements prior to the meeting saying that the person she knew is not the one portrayed in the media as a sexual predator who may have set up other meetings with women through Craigslist for the purpose of robbing them.

In an exclusive report on TODAY last week, a male professional from the Boston area said that Markoff had also been trolling Craigslist for encounters with transvestite males.

Shattering revelations
Markoff is formally charged with two crimes, the murder and assault in Boston. Rhode Island police have begun extradition proceedings to charge him with another attempted robbery of an exotic dancer in a hotel in Warwick, R.I.

The charges against Markoff and the revelation that the Boston University medical student may have been living a double life have been shattering, Honecker told Vieira.

“Obviously it was an emotional time for her. It was a realization that she has some difficult days ahead,” Honecker said. “She’s going to begin to look at her life and move on in the sense that she has things she wants to accomplish.”

The attorney said that his client, who is from the New Jersey shore, is an intelligent and strong woman who has suffered an enormous emotional blow.

“It’s been traumatic. It’s been dramatic,” Honecker said, asking Vieira to put herself in the shoes of a 23-year-old whose carefully laid plans for the future had been torn apart.

“Slowly, this strong young woman is beginning to come back,” he said.
