Candy Spelling sued by former employee

LOS ANGELES - A former employee of Candy Spelling’s has sued her for alleged wrongful termination, according to court papers acquired by Access Hollywood.

Lourdes Serrano filed papers on Thursday, April 16, with Los Angeles Superior Court against Spelling, the widow of TV mogul Aaron Spelling.

Serrano, who claims to have worked as a housekeeper for Spelling, alleged that she was told “Spelling would prefer that employees not take” breaks, though they are required by California labor laws.

Serrano claims that neither she nor her co-workers took breaks, until August 9, 2008, when she was allegedly informed by an estate security guard that she was “required to clock out, which she did.”

She took a second break the following day, and on August 11, 2008, she allegedly had a meeting with Spelling’s personal assistants in which they told her she was required to take two 10-minute breaks per day. On August 13, she claims to have taken a sick day; upon returning to work on August 16, she “learned that she had been terminated,” according to the papers.

The papers claim she was fired “in retaliation for her complaint” over the estate’s alleged violation of wage laws, including overtime laws.

Serrano’s suit asks for special and general damages, pre-judgment and post-judgment interest, and funds to cover attorneys’ fees. It also asks for a jury trial.
