OCALA, FL - While John Travolta and Kelly Preston grieve the loss of their teenage son, Jett, reports have surfaced that at least two individuals in the Bahamas are being investigated by Bahamian police over an attempt to extort money from the family.
Details of the extortion plot have not been revealed, but a Bahamian newspaper, The Tribune, reported on Monday that police are questioning two people, “one believed to be a politician.”
After the story broke, Travolta family lawyers Mike Ossi and Howard Butle issued a statement to the media over the reports.
“Regrettably in a time of such terrible grief, there are often a few individuals who attempt to make false claims in hopes of making millions of dollars,” their statement read, according to the Jacksonville Florida Times-Union. “We will never let that happen.”
The lawyers added that they have “the utmost confidence in the Bahamian police and government.”
As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Jett Travolta succumbed to a “seizure disorder” while on vacation with his family in Grand Bahama on January 2. He was laid to rest following a service in Ocala, Fla., on January 8.
