LOS ANGELES - In a cliffhanger that almost seemed as though it was conceived by a team of writers, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt did not marry on “The Hills” season finale Tuesday night.

After their quickie wedding in Mexico, Heidi and Spencer planned to make it official with a trip to the Beverly Hills courthouse — but Spencer had a change of heart just as he was about to say, “I do.”

Heidi's mom accused Spencer of orchestrating the couple’s elopement, and his sister Stephanie strongly voiced her concerns about a courthouse marriage to her brother.

“You can’t do this. She’s going to regret this. I think this is wrong,” Stephanie told Spencer just as they were about to walk into the courtroom.

Spencer told Heidi he wanted to give her a fantasy wedding, saying, “I just want to give you the wedding of your dreams that you have been talking about for three years. I’ll deal with it. It’s worth it to be with you the rest of my life. We’ll do it the way you want, I’m sorry, I love you so much.”

In another “Hills” surprise, Lauren and Heidi appear to be on civil terms. The two former friends had a small reconciliation where Lauren told Heidi, “You know that if you ever really needed anything, I’m here.” Could they be on their way back to true friendship?

As for Audrina and Justin, the biker guy gave the aspiring actress a ring, but their relationship appears to be still in the making.

Looks like fans will have to tune into the next season of “The Hills” to find out what happens.

That is ... if they don’t all move on to “The City” with Whitney.
