Forecasters were warning it might be a wet ride home for Thanksgiving holiday travelers on the East Coast today.
National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Korty said rainfall was expected to be pretty heavy along the Eastern seaboard and could have a big impact on travelers along Interstate 95, from the southeast all the way to New England.
The wet weather could turn to snow in the southern portion of the Great Lakes region. New York state also had the conditions for a bit of a wintry mix.
Aviation officials said Illinois' first snowstorm of the season had canceled at least 50 flights Sunday at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.
They add that low visibility Sunday afternoon was causing flight delays of up to an hour
Weather service officials said the storm could dump up to 8 inches of snow in some northern counties.
A winter storm warning covering all of north-central Illinois was in effect through midday Monday. Central Illinois could see around 5 inches of snow.
Officials warned the storm could make travel hazardous for those returning home from the holidays.
