ALBANY, N.Y. - New York state agriculture officials are warning consumers not to eat a particular brand of cheese because of possible E. coli contamination.

A routine inspection of La Clarita Queseria Queso Fresco late last month found E. coli bacteria in a sample of the cheese.

The manufacturer, Queseria La Poblanita Inc., is voluntarily recalling the cheese, which is typically used in Mexican food.

The New York City company sold the cheese in a 14-ounce net weight package dated Sept. 21, 2008.

Agriculture Department spokeswoman Jessica Chittenden says the cheese was primarily sold in the New York metro area. As of Tuesday afternoon, no illnesses related to the cheese had been reported.
