DALLAS - Heavy rains settled in across areas of North Texas for the sixth consecutive day Wednesday, weakening a bridge and forcing postponement of a homecoming parade planned Saturday for Olympic gold medalist Nastia Liukin.
Stacie Hanes, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, said several towns in North Texas received 3 to 4 inches of rain with the latest round of storms. Parts of Collin County north of Dallas got up to 9 inches.
Robert Salazar, an officer with the Fairview Police Department, said the latest rains weakened the supports of an asphalt bridge over Sloan Creek and made it unsafe to use.
"It's definitely not passable anymore," he said. "It's probably going to have to be reconstructed."
Salazar said there were no reported injuries. Streets near the creek did not flood.
Wednesday's downpour led to the postponement of a homecoming parade planned Saturday for Liukin. The Parker native won five medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, including gold in the women's all-around gymnastic finals.
Parker Mayor Joe Cordina said the new date will be scheduled for some time within the next eight days.
The weather service expected the rain to be gone by Thursday as the system moved east.
Rain earlier in the week caused flooding in parts of northern Texas and Oklahoma, as well as southern Texas, where an estimated 1,400 homes in Starr County were flooded Tuesday.
