HAMPTON ROADS, VA. (WAVY.com)-- With the sun beating down outside, camp counselors at Trinity Lutheran School in Norfolk brought the activities inside. From basketball to bowling, it was a swinging good time. The camp takes sun safety seriously.

"Children are always required to bring a water bottle everyday. They carry it with them when they go outside, they're also required to wear sunscreen everyday," says Judy Sykes, school director.

On particularly hot days, counselors at the YMCA in Newport News find unique ways to keep their campers busy indoors. Wandering water drinkers can be found everywhere.

"It's our counselors duty to constantly remind them. They come up with games, drinking water game make sure they're staying hydrated," says Leslie Bryant, Assistant Branch Director.

The camp finds shady areas and cool places to go. This morning, they spent time at a local water park says counselor Brian McLaughlin.

"They have all kinds of water cannons, dump buckets, interactive play area, as well as a swimming pool."

Bryant says counselors keep a watchful eye on the weather and plan for days when the degrees make it unsafe for fun in the sun.
