CAPITOL HILL - Congress will tackle some high-profile issues as it returns from a week-long holiday break.
One item in the spotlight is the 300-billion-dollar measure that would provide cheaper loans for people who could lose their homes. The housing rescue bill has been bogged down in the Senate by a dispute over whether some tax breaks for renewable energy producers should be extended.
Senators could vote as early as tomorrow on a controversial electronic surveillance measure. It provides telecommunications companies with immunity for warrantless wiretaps they conducted at the request of the administration after Nine-Eleven.
Lawmakers also have to figure out how they want to deal with a planned cut in payments to doctors who treat Medicare patients.
