Coalition soldier dies in Taliban hideout attack

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A U.S.-led coalition soldier was killed in an operation in western Afghanistan Sunday while a boy died when a suicide bomber targeted a Canadian military convoy in the country's south, officials said.

The bomber struck the Canadian convoy in the southern city of Kandahar, said police officer Abdul Karim. One boy was killed and two other boys were wounded, he said.

Capt. Fraser Clark, a spokesman for Canadian troops in Kandahar, said three soldiers were wounded and sent for treatment at the military airfield.

One military vehicle appeared to be damaged, according to an Associated Press reporter at the scene.

In western Farah province, a U.S.-led coalition soldier was killed during an operation Sunday, the coalition said in a statement.

Police: Several militants killed
The operation which involved Afghan forces, was aimed at a Taliban hideout, a police official in the region said. He said two Afghan police and several Taliban militants were also killed.

Insurgents have been targeting Afghan, U.S. and other foreign troops in their attempts to weaken the government of President Hamid Karzai.

Over 1,200 people — mostly militants — have died in insurgency-related violence so far this year, according to an AP count.
