LONG LAKE, Wash. - While one Long Lake family was at church Sunday a fire destroyed their waterfront home in Nine Mile Falls.

Neighbor Homer Coleman lives near the home at 6518 N. Myrtle Drive and called 911 when he saw smoke and flames around noon.

Fire Chief Mark Beck said Stevens County Fire District #1 crews arrived to find the house "well-involved." The fire had a "good head start" on them but they were able to confine the fire to the house itself.

Despite a quick response from firefighters and access to fire hydrants in the heavily wooded area near Long Lake, the fire destroyed the house.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

Neigbors were concerned about several pets at the house and at one point they tried unsuccessfully to ram the garage door down to save the dogs. Later firefighters were able to cut into the door and save one dog, but are unsure as to the fate of a second.

For a short time the fire threatened to ignite two nearby homes and several propane tanks.
