CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. - A controversial solution to a deer problem is dividing a community in Cumberland County. Around 40 deer took up residence in a Carlisle neighborhood near Interstate 81 after a housing development forced them from their habitat.

Borough council members called on the United States Department of Agriculture to help because of complaints of property damage and a number of car accidents.

Local officials said they spent two years looking at all options and decided it would be best for a sharpshooter to hunt and kill the animals.

Some residents tell News 8 they will miss the deer.

"No one wanted to do this, it's not what I?d want to do, but given the options, it's the only viable thing we can do,? said Councilman Tim Scott.

The borough will not announce when the hunt is taking place to prevent crowds from gathering.

The meat from the hunt will be donated to local food banks.
