CINCINNATI - An ancient Chinese practice of finding harmony in your interior decoration can also help you find a mate or keep the one you?ve got, experts said. Feng shui practitioners use traditional methods of combining colors and arranging furniture to help improve mood and productivity, but some believers said the practice has other effects.

Liz McGavern and her husband have been married for 28 years, and she said a friend suggested placing some candles near the couple?s bed to enhance their partnership.

?Believe it or not, it opened up our communication between my husband and myself,? McGavern said.

Her friend, Janice Ash, said the practice works, and she suggested placing items in pairs around a bedroom to represent the couple you currently are in or the one you want to be part of.

?The most important thing is to declutter, get rid of all of the clutter, clean your house keep it nice,? Ash said.

Color is also important, she said, particularly in bedding.

?The other thing you want to do in your bedroom is use the colors red and pink in your bed, and to have the bed inviting and soft and attractive,? Ash said.

Make sure there is a clear path to each side of the bed, Ash said, and place similar or matching bedstands and lamps to symbolize equality in the relationship.

Single people looking for a mate should make room in their home for that person, she said.

?Open up space in your drawers and your closets, if you're single, to symbolize having the room available for another person to enter your life and to join you," Ash said.

Small changes that cost little can add up to a big difference in your life, Ash said, and she offered stories to prove her point.

?My son got married after I feng shuied him,? Ash said. ?He met his wife three days later and two years later they were married.?

McGavern said she was skeptical at first, but noticed a difference within a week.

?Go for it,? she recommended. ?You don't have anything to lose and everything to gain."
