It happened in the city of Vacaville, about 30 miles west of Sacramento.
The truck's owner said he made the discovery when he went add some power steering fluid to his vehicle. Walter Witthoeft popped the hood and said he saw a pair of eyes staring back at him.
He realized a pit bull had somehow found his way into the truck's engine compartment.
The pooch growled and Witthoeft went and called police. He said the officers who arrived couldn't believe what they were seeing either.
The dog had shredded the engine compartment, in an apparent attempt to chew his way out of his situation. Witthoeft said the pooch had bitten through the wires, vacuum hoses as well as gas lines. He said he suspects the dog got into the engine sometime Monday night and stayed there until the hood was popped.
The dog was safely removed and the truck was taken to the shop.
