The expansion of a high-tech company in Duluth Thursday is part of a positive trend in business in the area. At a time when the economy is hurting its providing some very positive news for the area as Trevor Roy reports. Duluth-based Ikonics held a ground-breaking ceremony in Morgan Park this afternoon to kick off Phase One of an ongoing plan for the expansion of the company. A new 35-thousand square foot building will be built on 11 acres of previously unused land in Morgan Park. Ikonics C-E-O Bill Ulland says the time and incentives were right for the expansion. "We looked around the area and we came to the conclusion that this is an ideal site for us." It's enough room for us to grow, it's got the JOBZ credits associated with it and it's just a great site." Ikonics purchased the land from the Duluth Economic Development Authority for over 350-thousand dollars and will take advantage of the lot's JOB-Z designation. The JOB-Z designation offers tax breaks for companies who build in designated zones. Ikonics isn't the only company with growth on its mind; Cirrus is expanding into the old Northwest maintenance facility and the Twin Cities-based computer company VISI is planning to build near the United Health Care building on Rice Lake Road. With renewed passion for economic expansion DEDA President and City Councilor Jim Stauber says the Economic Development Authority is here to get the deal done. "It's what the economic development authority is here for. It's one of the things the staff has been working around the clock, quietly often but making opportunities happen here in Duluth, that's exactly what we're here for." In Morgan Park, Trevor Roy the Northlands NewsCenter. Ikonics specializes in the creation and transfer of digital imaging. The new building is expected to be completed by October.
