Indianapolis - Police are still searching for a man who robbed an east side Huntington Bank branch and shot a bank teller in the process.

With the armed robbery suspect still on the loose, security at schools is a concern, especially after police noticed a breach in security at a nearby high school just a few minutes after the crime occurred.

As soon as the 911 call came into dispatch around 9:30 Tuesday morning, the principal at Warren Central High School knew about it.

Tony Burchett with Warren Township Schools said Principal Rich Shepler "was in the commons area with one of our resource police officers and across the police line he heard there had been a robbery at 21st and Huntington."

Lt. Dennis May with Indianapolis Metro Police said the high school is only about a quarter of a mile away from the robbery location.

School officials sprung into action, mandating that only police officers were allowed to enter the school and only through the main entrance. The school was on lockdown.

"All of our doors are locked. We go to our particular areas and make sure that nobody is gaining entrance," said Burchett.

Despite those precautions, police say some students were able to get inside the building when the school says it was on lockdown. Police say a school employee let them in. The school says that's not allowed.

"Teachers are not allowed to open the door for anybody," said Burchett.

School officials call a student entrance during lockdown a security breach.

"If there's any concern they would report to door one and go through the hands and guides of our resource officers," said Burchett.

School officials say they plan on conducting their own investigation to confirm what police saw on surveillance video: students entering from a side door without a police escort during a lockdown situation. School officials say they will discuss any potential remedy after they can confirm what happened.
