D.C.'s commemorative quarter too contentious

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Mint has rejected three designs for a commemorative District of Columbia quarter because they include the slogan "Taxation Without Representation."

The Mint said Wednesday the slogan is too controversial. D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty says it's a fair assessment.

The District already uses the slogan on its license plates to draw attention to its lack of voting rights. But Fenty says the district will now submit an alternative inscription for its quarter.

D.C. is being included in the popular state quarter program after 10 years of lobbying.
