This winter is about, as always, keeping warm by the fire. (Or traveling to more temperate climates!) Dress your family in cozy knits during a day of rest or play at home, and look to bright colors and fun details to provide a welcome change from your all-gray-all-the-time cold-weather wardrobe.

Cable-knits
Cable-knit is a winter mainstay for any member of the family. Look for sweaters that are updated with thick sherpa or fleece lining, and keep an eye out for the classic pattern on extra-warm hats and mittens.

Pair with: Layer over a tunic and leggings for Mom, or a union suit for the little ones.

Thin knits
Moms can create a look that is both functional and stylish by layering thin knits in a chic mix of weights and textures. This year’s pieces come in a variety of fashion-friendly silhouettes, like flattering A-line cuts, roomy babydolls and long, ample tunics. Mix your knits in contrasting jewel tones to add some character.

Pair with: Pair tunics with leggings and furry boots, and more cropped pieces with jeans or stretch cords and ballet flats.

Sportswear
Sporty winterwear is ideal for a day of lounging at home or playing outside. Layer bright thermals underneath sweatshirt-inspired hoodies to add a subtle pop of color for those dads who will only wear neutrals.

Pair with: Wear these gym-friendly tops with thin corduroy pants (that get softer with each wash) and loafers.

Handmade
Nothing will ward off the winter chill like long, chunky wool sweaters and scarves that look like Grandma could have knit them herself. Go for knits embellished with pom-poms, rosettes, embroidery or fringe to make any item feel more special and look handmade. The well-worn, hand-me-down feel of these pieces is welcome during cold months.

Pair with: With items this warm, just a pair of brightly colored yoga pants will do for girls, and thermal bottoms for boys. Add suede moccasins that can be worn inside or outside the house.
