Crossover has specially designed features to appeal to skiiers

DETROIT - Saab is demonstrating its interest in joining the crossover segment with its Saab 9-4X BioPower concept vehicle, set to be revealed Sunday at the North American International Auto Show.

Saab said the vehicle reflects the brand's Scandinavian heritage, with clean lines and respect for the environment. Its four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine produces 300 horsepower — a lot for its size — and is made to run on E85 ethanol.

Inside, clutter is kept to a minimum with flush-mounted controls. It also features a panoramic glass roof.

Designers from Saab and parent General Motors Corp. worked with Salomon Sports to add features for skiers, including a sliding floor with a fold-out aluminum ski holder and a heated compartment under the floor for boots. The entire rear cargo area is covered with waterproof, scratch-resistant rubber trim.

Although Saab says it does plan a crossover, it didn't say whether this concept vehicle will go into production.

The Detroit auto show opens to the public next Saturday.
