Power restored at Grand Rapids airport
Passenger terminal left with limited lighting, no heat for 14 hours
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Power has been restored at an airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan, after an outage that lasted nearly 14 hours.
The Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids lost primary power to its passenger terminal last night and had been using backup power until this morning.
An airport spokesman says a utility company determined that the outage was caused by a problem with a piece of equipment on airport property.
The passenger terminal was left with limited lighting and no heat. Airport workers screened baggage by hand and travelers used stairways from the ground to board planes, instead of the usual mechanized bridges.
Some flights were diverted from the airport last night, but planes have been taking off and landing today.
The air field, control tower and communications, navigation and security systems all had power during the outage.
