CAPE MAY COURTHOUSE, N.J. - A doctor living in Ohio was arrested on a charge that he beat his boss to death when he was a chef in New Jersey 25 years ago.
George Carty, now 49, appeared in court on Thursday on a charge of aggravated manslaughter. He then quickly exited court with prosecutors and his public defender, who couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
An arraignment date is to be set; Carty remained held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
The doctor, who lives in the Cleveland suburb of Richmond Heights, was arrested Tuesday and waived extradition.
In the early 1980s, Carty and John Attenborough worked as chefs at Wildwood Golf and Country Club in Middle Township. The 57-year-old Attenborough was in charge. Carty, then 24, was his assistant.
Attenborough's body was found next to his car near a construction site. Authorities have not said why he may have been killed.
Robert Keating, then a bartender and now general manager at the club, told the Press of Atlantic City for Thursday's newspapers that both men drank heavily. And when he was drinking, Keating said, Attenborough became belligerent and bossed Carty around.
Bartender says suspect swore off alcohol
The case was put aside until earlier this year, when it was assigned to a rookie detective.
Keating said it seemed Carty swore off alcohol and became a different man over the years.
He graduated from Atlantic Cape Community College in 1990 and became a registered nurse.
He graduated in 2005 from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.
