Statuses explained

Not deficient:
not structurally deficient and not functionally obsolete.

Functionally obsolete:
does not meet current criteria for deck geometry (e.g., lane width), load carrying capacity, clearance, or approach roadway alignment.

Structurally deficient:
needing significant maintenance attention, rehabilitation, or replacement. A bridge is always rated as structurally deficient if it gets a rating of "poor" or worse on any of its three main components: deck, superstructure, and substructure, or if its overall structural evaluation is "intolerable."

Note: a rating of functionally obsolete or structurally deficient does not necessarily mean the bridge is unsafe.

Entering a location

You can enter locations using different formats, depending on how much information you have. Here are three examples:

Full address:
"30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10112"

City and state:
"Seattle, WA"

Zip code:
"34990"

You do not need to enter both locations using the same format.
For example, your start location can be entered as a zip code and your end location can be entered as a full address.

This map shows the condition and inspection dates for more than 100,000 bridges in the U.S. that are crossed by at least 10,000 vehicles per day. The records come from the latest National Bridge Inventory, as analyzed by msnbc.com. Inspections through 2006 are included. Only bridges, on/off ramps and overpasses within .2 miles of your chosen route are shown. The locations were provided by state departments of transportation. Some states are more accurate than others in mapping their bridges.

3. Once the bridge data has finished loading, roll over a bridge icon to see more information about that bridge.
4. Filter the returned bridges by inspection schedule and status in the "Route options" tab.

A message will appear if there are no bridges along the route you entered. Only bridges with minimum average daily traffic of 10,000 vehicles are included in our database.
