Blast at Baltimore sugar plant

BALTIMORE - An explosion blew out windows and started a fire Friday at one of the last remaining industrial plants on Baltimore’s waterfront, fire officials said. No serious injuries were reported.

The explosion occurred about 10 a.m. at the Domino Sugar Co. plant, a landmark topped by a large neon sign that can be seen from the nearby Inner Harbor.

The explosion was reported on the ninth floor and fire was found on the fifth and ninth floors, he said. The cause wasn’t clear.

Fire Chief William Goodwin said employees were working on a dust collection unit at the time of the explosion. The blast damaged that section of the building and engineers were determining whether operations could resume, the fire chief said.

Firefighters found “many windows busted out from the explosion” and heavy fire and some smoke when they arrived, said Kevin Cartwright, a fire department spokesman. Employees were evacuated, and the fire was quickly brought under control, he said.

A worker reported missing earlier was found among those who evacuated the building. Another suffered a minor injury to his hand, Cartwright said.
