10 in Indiana ill from E. coli outbreak

FLOYDS KNOBS, Ind. — An outbreak of E. coli has sickened at least 10 people in southern Indiana, including seven schoolchildren.

      Nearly 1,000 dogs reportedly have been sickened by chicken jerky pet treats from China, according to a new tally of complaints from worried owners submitted to federal veterinary health officials.

All the people infected last month are linked in some way to Galena Elementary School in Floyds Knobs, about 15 miles northwest of Louisville, Kentucky. Three of the cases do not involve students.

Officials say the problem is not related to any school cafeteria food, and is not linked to last week's massive recall of frozen hamburgers by Topps Meat Company of New Jersey.

The school district says at least three of the cases appear to have been caused from exposure to a sick family member.

Galena Elementary has remained open since the first infection on September 21st, and officials say it has been cleaned regularly.

In addition to the 10 confirmed cases this week, health officials are still waiting on lab results for some other suspected infections.
