Romney raises $10 million in third quarter

Republican presidential hopeful also lends $8.5 million more to campaign

WASHINGTON - Republican Mitt Romney raised $10 million and lent his presidential campaign $8.5 million more in the past three months, aides said Thursday.

The size of the loan was unexpected and nearly matched his personal contribution to the campaign during the first six months of the year. Overall, Romney, a former venture capitalist and Massachusetts governor, has dipped into his vast personal wealth for a total of nearly $17.5 million.

So far, Romney has raised about $45 million from contributors. With his own money, the campaign's total receipts are more than $62 million.

The campaign reported Thursday that Romney had $9 million cash on hand, meaning that with current spending but without his personal contribution, his presidential effort would be in the red.

Romney collected contributions from 23,000 new donors between July and September, bringing his total number of donors to 100,000, the campaign said.

"Our campaign made considerable progress this quarter expanding Governor Romney's support across the country," spokesman Kevin Madden said. "Governor Romney has built a nationwide network of volunteers and supporters that are energizing our efforts as we work toward the first votes being cast in January."
