LOS ANGELES - After winning outstanding lead actress in a drama series at the Emmy Awards Sunday night, Sally Field made headlines with her acceptance speech.
“And, let’s face it, if the mothers ruled the (world), there would be no (expletive) wars in the first place,” Field said.
The FOX network, which broadcast the awards show, in trying to prevent the airing of an expletive in violation of FCC standards, may have censored Field, but backstage, her words received praise from former Vice President and environmental crusader Al Gore.
“Separating the sentiment from the language used to express it, I certainly agree with the sentiment,” Gore told “Access Hollywood.” “I honestly think that one of the reasons why we made this big mistake of getting into the Iraq war is that so much of the television media has been concentrated in a relatively few hands.”
“Joel Hyatt and I started Current TV in order to break up the television medium so that individuals can have access to it instead of just waiting for comments in an awards show or something (to) have a regular dialogue with the American people and give them a chance to be on TV,” Gore, who won an outstanding interactive Emmy, said.
As for Field, she told “Access” she was inspired by her character Nora Walker in “Brothers & Sisters,” to make her speech.
“I wanted to acknowledge mothers and especially mothers who are waiting for their children to come home from war because that is what Nora Walker is doing,” she said.
