Why it's a deal: The lowest round-trip fares we found on Kayak for travel to Montevideo in early October were $770 from Miami (Copa Panama), $922 from Orlando (multiple airlines), and $941 from Tampa (multiple airlines).

Trip details: The package includes round-trip airfare to Montevideo on Lan (12 hours with a stop in Santiago, Chile) and a five-night stay at the 96-room Balmoral Plaza Hotel overlooking Cagancha Square, a few blocks from 18 de Julio, a main thoroughfare that is lined with shops, cafes, and offices, and about two miles from the beach. You can add extra nights at the Hotel Balmoral for $32 per person per night. Upgrades are available to four other hotel properties for an additional $40 to $310 per person.

While in Montevideo, you'll take a three-hour private bus tour of top attractions like Constitution Square and the Congress building, the rose garden in the Prado neighborhood, Batlle & Ordoñez Park, the residential neighborhood of Carrasco, and Plaza Virgilio.

Travelers to Buenos Aires in neighboring Argentina often hop over to Uruguay for the day. You can find tips on visiting Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay's oldest town, in our article Buenos Aires, Then What?. And yes, you could easily do the reverse and make a day-trip to Buenos Aires part of your trip to Uruguay. For more tips on what to see and do, visit the official tourism Web sites of Uruguay and Argentina.

Keep in mind that the seasons in Uruguay are the opposite of ours, which makes the period from September through early December (their spring and early summer) a lovely time to visit; average temperatures are in the mid-60s Fahrenheit.
