“In Style” scoured the United States to create the first ever cross-country style report. They asked stylish insiders in six major cities — including Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Chicago and Miami — to define each city’s unique look. California native Katharine McPhee models the looks in the September issue (on sale now).

Discover each city’s autumn style:

New York
New Yorkers are all about dressing like a lady — pairing dresses with tights to create a polished head-to-toe look that can take you from the office to a night on the town. Dark stockings and the perfect heel are a must. Big trends for fall include opaque tights paired with metallic dresses or brocade suits. Silver is also a must for fall as it can be slinky, yet sophisticated.

Miami
Miami is a city where fashion is influenced by the city’s Latin American residents and jet-setters. Miami is all about jewelry and high hemlines. The key to this look is playing with proportions; pairing a blousy top with a short skirt is sophisticated and sexy. A key fall trend spotted here is emphasizing your figure and even adding a belt at the waist to help create an hourglass shape. Though shoes make a statement, when heading out in Miami, anyone can achieve the look with strappy sandals that help you feel sexy.

Chicago
In Chicago women dress to please themselves, so fashion is comfortable yet chic. The key is adding unique touches to make the look your own, like an embellished ring, cuff or skinny belt. Envelope clutches, high-waist trousers, patent leather belts and jewelry reflect the beautiful, smart vibe of this city. A fall trend you are sure to spot in the Windy City is menswear-inspired looks like wide-leg trousers. Pair them with Oxford booties and you are set for fall. Beading and studding is also a key trend this season, and reflects the vintage fashions we spotted in Chicago.

Dallas
Dallas is all about dressing up. No jeans here; it’s all about the dress. Dallas is defined by sophisticated glamour. Sexy means bold, yet feminine looks. The perfect outfit for going out in this city is a satin dress in a bold color, impact jewelry and a touch of patent leather. A big fall trend echoed here are bright, primary hues since colors are big this season.

Los Angeles
Los Angeles is all about casual glam. It is hard to find a place in this city where jeans are not appropriate. Make sure to always have a sweater on hand for cold L.A. nights, though. Sweaters paired with belts will be a mainstay this fall. Don’t be afraid to pair a warm sweater with your favorite skinny jeans. This look is all about accessories, from bangles to a clutch to patent peep-toe heels. L.A. style is casual and almost bohemian when accessorized. A moody palette of gray is prominent in this city and also a major color trend for fall. Pairing a gray sweater with a rich, eggplant color tank is the perfect way to complete this look.
