Taking a break, but not for long

It's time to detox.

It's been a couple crazy months with many poker trips to Vegas and Atlantic City, and I admit that I'm a little sick of poker at this moment. Vegas -- and Vegas especially during World Series week -- can do this to you.

Yesterday, during a quick cash-game session at Bellagio, I sat with many lifelong grinders, who've been at this for decades, long before the poker boom. And I heard a lot of grumbling about the poker lifestyle, the injustice inherent in the game and the misery of it all. One player, clearly fed up with what he sees as his bad luck, took a dollar bill, ripped it into more than 20 little pieces and then threw it in the middle of the table.

Clearly, this was not the place for me to cheer up after busting out of the World Series. And I was losing focus and not playing my A game. It was time to go. Thankfully, Vegas has a lot to offer besides the card tables. And I'll get a lot of sun by the pool and eat a couple great dinners before I leave.

It's strange. After busting out last year, all I wanted to do was play more tournaments. Now I can't wait to get home. Of course, when I get home, there's a Monday night poker game I almost never miss. I bet I'll make an appearance.

That's the thing about being a poker player. You love the game, and sometimes the game hates you, but you always come back. I've been around the game long enough to know that many players in Vegas have mixed feelings about poker right now. I know that many are vowing to take a break from poker. And I know that I'll see many of them at the tables soon.
