Running bad, but not at the tables
By Andy Wang, MSNBC.com contributor
Posted July 7, 11:45 p.m. ET Poker players like to say they're "running bad" when they hit a spell of bad luck. I ran pretty bad Saturday -- and I didn't even lose a dollar at the tables. First there was the van that ran into my rental car in the Rio parking lot. Thankfully, nobody was hurt -- but the result involved waiting in the 106-degree sun more than an hour for a tow truck to bring me another car. Then, when I got to my room at Bellagio to write my latest World Series dispatch, the phones and Internet connection didn't work. An hour later, an engineer came to my room and noticed that the cords had been put in the wrong jacks by somebody when my room's carpet was professionally cleaned earlier today before I checked in (what happened in the room to warrant a professional cleaning I do not wish to know). | |
The night before, the Omaha game was so good that I played until 4 a.m. Heimowitz and Rothstein were not there. Players were calling multiple raises and/or re-raising before the flop with absolute garbage. This was the kind of game where getting slightly unlucky for 30 minutes could have you down $3,000. And winning one hand could then get you back to even.
I say this with conviction because this is what happened to me. I ended up booking a small win for the night, but it was definitely a roller-coaster.
I hope that Sunday is more of a steady climb.
If you're at the World Series and want to see first-hand how I'm doing, I'm starting the day at Table 125.
