Cracked windshield forces emergency landing

SEATTLE - A United Airlines jetliner bound from Seattle to Chicago made an emergency landing Sunday night in North Dakota when a cockpit window cracked.

Nobody was hurt in the incident aboard Flight 486, said airline spokeswoman Megan McCarthy in Chicago. The Airbus A319 was carrying 120 passengers and five crew members.

The plane was bound from Seattle to Chicago's O'Hare airport when the window cracked about 8:20 p.m. CDT and the plane diverted to Bismarck, N.D.

An investigation will be conducted to determine why the window cracked, McCarthy said, adding she did not know whether the crack caused any depressurization problem on the plane.

Another plane was being brought in to take the passengers on to Chicago.
