New flight connects gambling hotspots

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - A new nonstop flight connecting the nation's two main gambling hotspots is now in service.

One flight is to fly each way each day between Atlantic City International Airport and McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. The first westbound flight departed Atlantic City shortly before 7 p.m. on Thursday.

The Spirit Airlines flight will be a convenience for casino operators that have operations in both cities and need to shuttle their executives between them.

It also opens new markets for Atlantic City, a city with easy access from big East Coast cities such as New York and Philadelphia but where the airport has limited service. Business boosters see the new flight as a potential boon to efforts to increase the city's convention business.

Passengers can fly to Las Vegas and connect to other cities all over the West.

Atlantic City International is served by only two commercial carriers: Spirit and Delta Air Lines.

Spirit flies between Atlantic City and four cities in Florida — Fort Myers, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa — and Myrtle Beach, S.C. In the spring and summer, the airline ceases operating the West Palm Beach flight and adds a Detroit flight instead.

Delta Airlines flies nonstop from Atlantic City to its Atlanta hub and Orlando.
