Washed-up legs might match torso

MAMARONECK, N.Y. - Both of the human legs that washed ashore on Long Island have similarities with a torso found in a suitcase on a beach across the sound, police said Thursday.

It could be 10 days before more scientific evidence emerges, said Detective Sgt. Robert Holland of the Mamaroneck police in Westchester.

Police think the legs might match a woman's torso that was found in a suitcase on a Mamaroneck beach March 3. The legs were found on Long Island on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"There still is nothing confirmed as far as our torso is concerned," Holland said.

Both legs had pink polish on some of the toes, police said.

And some similarities indicate the legs match up with the torso, said Lt. James Gaffney, a Mamaroneck police spokesman. He would not reveal details.

DNA tests could take a week to 10 days, Holland said.

"First they'll see if the two legs match, and then they'll be compared to the torso," he said.
