BERWICK, Pa. - Home from military action in Iraq, a wounded Marine has found himself in another form of engagement.
Lance Cpl. Derrick Sharpe was welcomed home to Berwick this week with a parade. As his fire-truck escort pulled up to his house, his girlfriend hopped in the pickup truck carrying him and dropped to her knee with a ring in her hand.
With tears streaming down her cheeks, she asked, "Will you marry me?"
Stunned, Sharpe accepted. They sealed their engagement with a kiss.
The 19-year-old Marine was critically injured in an explosion Sept. 23 in Iraq. He was given only a 30 percent chance to live. His right leg was amputated.
Sharpe will be home for a month before returning to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington for rehabilitation.
