In her new book, "Healthy Living from the Inside Out: Every Woman’s Guide to Real Beauty, Renewed Energy, and a Radiant Life," actress-turned-author Mariel Hemingway suggests starting off each day with a healthy morning protein and fruit-based shake instead of a bowl of cereal.

"For some reason America decided that sweet food and grain-based food is what should be served for breakfast," says the 45-year-old mother of two. "But it's not the case in other parts of the world. In Sweden, Japan, or Scotland you might eat fish first thing; in the Alps you'd get cheese and cold cuts; in South India you'd feast on delicious lentil stew."

Adjust your breakfast first and you are more likely to start the day from a place of neutral calm, says Hemingway. Here's her recipe.

The Morning Shake
Mariel Hemingway, author of "Healthy Living from the Inside Out," HarperCollins, 2006

One serving

The shake is just an easy way to get good nutrition quickly. It's easy and simple. It also makes a great afternoon snack and it tastes good.

INGREDIENTS

1 scoop vanilla flavored whey protein powder
1 scoop flaxseed powder
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
room temperature drinking water
ice
1/2 Stevia packet (optional)

DIRECTIONS

Put a cup of drinking water and some ice into a blender. Add whey powder, flaxseed powder, and frozen berries. Blend on high. Mixture should be thick and smooth, not icy. If it is too frosty, add a little hot water to soften the texture. Drink in a tall glass, or pour over fresh berries.

TIPS

Add stevia only if shake is not sweet enough. The whey powder alone should make it quite sweet.
