Clinton gets surprise NY Post endorsement

NEW YORK — For a racy tabloid, the New York Post generally leans conservative. So some readers might be surprised to find it endorsing Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton for re-election.

That's the same paper that, before her first candidacy, had a headline reading, "Don't Run!"

And in today's editorial, the Post admits it's "a little" surprised to be backing Clinton. But the paper says her scarcely known Republican opponent "isn't a credible alternative."

The paper also credits Clinton with being "a pretty good senator" who has been "closer to the political center" than it expected.

But the Post wants to make sure Clinton stays on Capitol Hill -- and out of the White House. To that end, it's also calling on voters to re-elect her in 2012.
