Some tips on how to make paying dues pay off:
— Find out right away whether the job offers the possibility of advancement or if others have made it up the ladder from your position.
— A year is a long time to stick it out in a place you don’t love. Wait about three to four months and then start asking your bosses what they think of your work and what potential there is for advancement, advises career coach Kate Zabriskie, who is also founder of Business Training Works Inc. in Port Tobacco, Md.
— Find a company where there are several new hires also paying their dues so you can share your misery.
— There’s nothing wrong with testing out different fields on the lower rungs getting a feel for each industry.
— Don’t think of it as paying dues to a particular company. You are paying dues to the work world, and any experience can help you in the long run.
— Ask your boss how he or she got to where they are today.
— When tasks are mainly unrelated to your work, such as getting the bosses dry cleaning, it’s time to talk to your manager or move on.
— You are more likely to move up in title and salary by changing companies.
— Check with your peer group. Are they doing what you’re doing?
— Find mentors who are in the field you’re interested in to see if they to had to pay dues, what they did exactly, and how long it took them.
