  Fact file: Personality testing
Tips to keep in mind before you take a personality test:
1. Find out the name of the test you’re being asked to take and research it online or at the library. Some of the most popular include: the Six Factor Personality Questionnaire, 16 Personality Factors, Hogan Personality Inventory and the Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey.
2. Get as much information about the test as you can to (a) make sure you are ready for the types of questions it will ask so you’re ready and (b) find out if the test is overly personal or has come under legal fire. (Note that some employers create their own tests in house. In those cases you will have to rely on the employer to tell you what the test measures.)
3. Make sure to ask your prospective employer who will be administering the test, and ask about the expertise of whoever will be evaluating it.
4. Make sure there are stringent safeguards to safeguard the privacy of your test results.
5. Talk to other employees at the firm you’re applying to to find out what their experience was with the test.
6. If you are asked personal questions such as religious beliefs, or sexual preferences, the test may be discriminatory and possibly not compliant with labor laws.
7. Call your state labor department to find out if the test you are being asked to take is legal.
