Democrats launch religion-friendly site

Effort to show Christians can belong to either party.

WASHINGTON - Democrats want Christians to know that they don't have to be Republicans to stay true to their faith.

They say a new Web site will help them see that Christianity and the Democratic Party are compatible.

WWW.FaithfulDemocrats.com is being launched by former Democratic Party Chairman David Wilhelm. It will feature theologians, party strategists, political leaders and bloggers in hopes of countering the belief that the Democratic Party is not friendly to religion.

Wilhelm says he knows it won't be easy. He remembers getting an unfriendly reception from the Christian Coalition 13 years when he suggested to its members that good Christians can belong to either party.

So Wilhelm says the new Internet site will give religious Democrats moral support and "some language they can use."
