updated 5:56 p.m. ET Sept. 4, 2006

KHARTOUM, Sudan - Somalia's virtually powerless government and an Islamic militia that has seized control of much of southern Somalia signed an agreement late Monday to eventually form a unified national army, officials said.

The deal, which came after two days of peace talks in Sudan, did not specify when the agreement would take effect. Talks were to resume Oct. 30 in Khartoum.
