Fall's new mood is posh and polished, so pack away those scruffy jeans and get ready for great new styles! We've got all the red hot and blue denim news — pencil skirts, skinny jeans, jumpers and more — right here in the latest edition of The Trend Report.
Pencil it in
The pencil skirt is a must-have on every trendista's shopping list. We love it in sleek and snug dark denim with just a bit of stretch to mold and hug your curves. The classic five-pocket style is as comfortable as your favorite pair of jeans, while a high-waisted, plain-front silhouette offers a more dressy option that can even be worn in some offices.
Trend tip: Pair your pencil skirt with dark leggings or tights and boots for a hip look.
Second skin
Skinny jeans are the denim trend of the moment and a favorite of A-list “it” girls. But you don't have to be skinny to wear them! For fall they look great paired with a hip-length sweater or tunic over a long tee (add a belt if you want waist definition). Go for dark blue “vintage” denim, black or (newest!) pale grey. Skinny, plain legs are A-OK, but you'll also find lots of fun detailing at the ankles like zippers, snaps and buckles.
Trend tip: Super-skinny jeans — which measure 10" around at the hem — look absolutely fabulous tucked into knee-high leather or suede boots. Look for a pair with lots of stretch if you want the most slimming fit.
If the shoe fits ...
We said denim was dressed up for fall and we meant it! And you don't have to limit yourself to clothing because denim accessories are another hot trend (and an instant wardrobe update). Designer brands are getting into this trend by showing shoes, handbags and belts in denim — we've spotted great finds at all price points from Louis Vuitton, Cole Haan, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Gucci to Paul & Joe for Target. Some styles fly “under the radar” and others are stamped with the designer's logo. It's up to you.
Trend tip: If you love what you find, splurge. If not, pass it up, because this is a trend that won't make it past Groundhog Day!
Top it off
A chic little topper is another fall essential and we've gone way beyond the “jean jacket” this season. Hot and trendy styles are the short little bolero jacket, the cropped cape and the vintage-inspired jacket and you can find all three in denim at a store near you! For the trendiest look opt for darker, unwashed denim which will add a posh and polished touch to your fall wardrobe.
Trend tip: Mix up your layers! It's perfectly fashionable to wear a cropped denim jacket with a longer tee or sweater.
Jump to it
We're loving the feminine and fun look of the jumper for fall, which is quickly becoming a favorite look for both teens and moms. Wear yours with a tee shirt, a sweater, leggings, boots and all the rest of your fall layers. It's a great way to jump into the “dressed up” trend with a bit of whimsical style. Denim jumpers echo the long, lean lines of must-have pencil skirts with slim, above-the-knee lengths.
Trend tip: Dress up your jumper even more by wearing it with a lightweight wool jersey tee and cinching it at the waist with a wide leather belt.
